Poem based on Psalm 90:

You were given a number the day you were born
The sum of your days here on earth
But because of the upside down ways of this world
It’s labeled “Day Zero” at birth

If only you knew that real number of yours
The total of days left remaining
I think you would find better use of your time
Than wasting a second complaining

The number of sunrises you get to see
Is subtracted by one every dawn
Why not set your alarm for an earlier hour
Today’s fleeting and then it is gone

Take advantage of all opportunities to
Move your body and let your feet dance
You never know which step will be your last one
Get in motion while you’ve got the chance

And because you can’t pinpoint the number of times
You’ll get to enjoy their embraces
Tell your loved ones how much they are loved everyday
To uplift and bring joy to their faces

May we all learn to number our days in a way
That shows value in each one deleted
Leaving evidence of a life that’s been well-lived
When our time in this world is completed
